The goal of the game is to build an inn, make it popular for both local and international tourists, while also unraveling the mystery behind the Aswang folklore. Players must satisfy the inn customers and reach a five star rating. Filled with intricate storylines, complicated family dynamics, perplexing rumors of monsters, weather challenges, and more, this game is an immersive sim adventure with intricate gameplay. Game play achievement is divided into ten milestones of 5 half-stars that players must reach in their quest to become a 5-Star hotel.
Set in Siquijor, Philippines, an undiscovered paradise full of beautiful beaches and pristine forests, the player instructs family members on opening and running a hotel. Players must pay attention to the requests and preferences of the inn guests in order to provide the correct hotel rooms, desired amenities, room service, and maintenance. Hotel owners must also contend with rumors of monstrous beings called Aswangs, who have many locals and guests concerned about being eaten or turned into monsters.

Players must employ risk taking and strategy to win Innkeeper. Players are given specific challenges, which upon completion unlock additional amenities, family workers, advertising opportunities, and more. Detailed Report Ledgers allow players to track income and expenses. Players balance the costs of upgrades and amenities with the requests and preferences of their guests. They also hire and pay family members to work at the hotel. Players assign family members to different tasks, such as customer service, reception, cleaning, room maintenance, marketing, and more.
Other hotel sim games focus solely on making money or receiving a high rating. Innkeeper is different. Although the ultimate goal of the game is to receive a 5-star rating, the game is filled with intricate storylines and challenges that affect game play.
